The Art of Rap Festival follows in the footsteps of Ice T's critically acclaimed 2012 documentary, Something from Nothing: The Art of Rap and 2015’s The Art of Rap Festival which played to massive crowds last summer at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine, CA and Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, CA.
True to the theme of the film and the 2015 Festival, this year’s festival lineup features a who’s who of the history of Rap & Hip Hop. Ice T, who directed and executive produced the documentary, has sold over 10 million abums in the U.S. and his debut album, Rhyme Pays, became the first hip hop album to carry an explicit content sticker. He co-founded the heavy metal band Body Count in 1990 and has also enjoyed a successful acting career, including a starring role on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit since 2000. “Hip Hop is the most powerful and influential cultural movement since Rock and Roll. A TRUE art form that deserves RESPECT,” said Ice T.
Public Enemy was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013. Naughty By Nature has nearly a 20-year track record of creating the hits and party anthems that have become the soundtrack to our lives, including the hits “O.P.P.” and “Hip Hop Hooray.” Grandmaster Melle Mel & Scorpio are part of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, the first hip hop group ever to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2007. Sugar Hill Gang were the first hip hop group to place a rap single in the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 with the 1979 hit “Rapper’s Delight.” Mobb Deep is responsible for delivering some of the most popular and forever current anthems in rap music with tracks like “Survival Of The Fittest’” “Shook Ones Part II” and “Quiet Storm RMX.” EPMD delivered #1 Hot Rap Tracks, “Gold Digger” and “Crossover.” Kurtis Blow’s single “The Breaks” from his 1980 debut album became the first certified gold record rap song.
