Hip-Hop Royalty Run DMC, Naughty By Nature, Sugarhill Gang, Whodini, DJ Jazzy Jeff and GrandMaster’s Furious 5 will “Rock the House” at DTE Energy Music Theatre on Sunday, July 19 at 6 p.m.

Run DMC – Joseph “Run” Simmons and Daryl “DMC” McDaniels along with the late Jam Master Jay – achieved a number of notable firsts in hip-hop, including gold album (Run–D.M.C., 1984), platinum record (King of Rock, 1985) and multi-platinum certification (Raising Hell, 1986). Their catalog of hits include “King of Rock,” “It’s Tricky,” “Can You Rock It Like This,” “Walk This Way” (featuring Aerosmith), “Run’s House,” “Mary, Mary,” “You Be Illin’,“ “It’s Like That,” “My Adidas,” “Down with the King” (featuring Pete Rock & CL Smooth) and “Christmas in Hollis.” Eminem inducted the group into the Hall of Fame in 2009.

Sugarhill Gang – Wonder Mike and Master Gee and the late Big Bank Hank – were the first hip hop group to place a rap single in the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 with the 1979 hit “Rapper’s Delight.” Other Top 20 Billboard R&B hits included “8th Wonder” and “Apache (Jump On It).”
Whodini – Jalil Hutchins, Ecstasy and Grandmaster Dee – were one of the first rap groups to add a straight R&B twist to their music, thus laying the groundwork for the new jack swing movement. The group’s good-humored songs included “Magic's Wand” (the first rap song to feature an accompanying video), "The Haunted House of Rock" (a rewrite of "Monster Mash") and "Freaks Come Out at Night."
Born and raised in west Philadelphia, DJ Jazzy Jeff has wowed us with his flawless turntable skills, innovative production and musical versatility since 1985, from the success of “DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince” with partner Will Smith, to the critical acclaim of his production company, A Touch of Jazz.
In 2007, Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five became the first hip-hop act inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The group rose to fame in the early 1980s with their first successful single “Freedom” and with “The Message,” which is often cited as among the most influential hip-hop songs. GrandMaster’s Furious 5 is Melle Mel, The Kidd Creole, Scorpio and Rahiem.
