Elevators
There are two publicly accessible elevators in the venue.
If you have ever sat in the balcony at the Fox Theatre in Detroit, you may have had the opportunity to ride on one of the original passenger elevators installed back in 1928 before the theatre opened.
The elevators are beautifully detailed with red-leather wall panels, ornate brass railings and buttons and beautiful elephant-print carpet recreated from the original carpeting of the theatre during the restoration efforts of the 1980s.
It may surprise you to learn that these elevators were not originally part of the construction plans for the five-level theatre. The original plans of the building called for escalators, but likely due to concerns about soundproofing, these magnificent elevators were built instead.
Finally, it is important to point out that they are still hand-operated, just as they were on opening night.
